Life with boys … recently the boy and I escaped to California for a bit of exploration and as we waited for the shuttle to take us to yet another almost entirely uphill climb I overhead a little one tell his dad, “Hey look, I don’t have any arms,” to which dad replied, “well good, then you can’t hit your brother” … and I smiled as I knew that feeling so well … here was this young family with three boy shaped balls of energy ages 5, 3 and 1 … making their way through Yosemite … and I was tired just watching them collect pine cones and generally try to one up one another … and I then I really looked at these exhausted parents who had already made it up one pretty challenging hike and still had several in mind … with the youngest in a backpack and the middle one riding piggyback … and their mom apologized for their exuberance … for their “a lot-ness” … and I said it was fine, I got it, we have boys too … and then I had to admit they were big adult-ish boys now … and that this will all rush by so fast … and I know they didn’t believe me … they can’t yet see that there will once again be a time when they can travel as a pair and not a unit again … and that they might shed a tear as they watch another little family conquer the world together … and then the smile to know how all of these lives with boys weave together …
