Life with the Becks … as we cruised down the road last weekend, surrounded by families kicking off their summer, pulling their boats and campers and RVs and I was drawn back to the arrival of the motor home in our lives … and it was a bit like the Big Bang …
You see my Dad purchased the motor home after my Mom expressly said she was not on board with the idea … now when I say motor home I am not talking about a luxury, lifestyles of the rich and famous expense … no this was a 20+ year old box on wheels … turquoise Naugahyde that stuck to your legs (not sure if that was sweat or another substance, better not to ask) … original mattresses … and more stains than carpet … and of course he bought it anyway … and parked it at a friends house … just at the crest of the mountain … like a topper on a cake … maybe 100 yards off the highway … Yes, he tried to hide a motor home in plain sight … along the road the Mom drove down with a pretty high degree of frequency …
All I knew was all of a sudden my sister and I were uprooted to stay with my Mom’s best friend for a week … and Mom was ranting about how could he possible buy that “pimp mobile” … sixth grade me had no idea what that meant, or why it was a big deal (I was growing up in whitewashed Utah in the mid-eighties … we were a little more sheltered then) … all I knew was that there would be kinda run down … vintage … funky smelling adventures on the horizon … so many adventures on the horizon … I will share some of those with you too …
And I must add this photo is after many, many hours of “restoration” were involved … this is not what Mom spotted on her way home from Salt Lake … maybe our stay with the neighbor would have been shorter if she had …
