There are days when teaching digital media is less “creative exploration” and more “everyone please stop touching things until I can figure out what just broke.”
Today’s adventure started with D2L apparently eating quiz scores. Again. I finally emailed the class asking everyone to tell me their Illustrator quiz grade because I was now keeping a paper record like it was 1987.
Then one student’s computer developed sticky keys. Her InDesign file would not open on the school computers because the lab was running an older version. We tried saving the file down. IT tried. She exited out and lost font settings and text-box formatting. Then the file would not save to the jump drive. Then she started rebuilding the first half of the project before the computer lab closed.
At one point she came looking for me, missed me in the classroom, and apparently checked the parking lot too.
My contribution to this technological masterpiece was basically: “Get me what you can. Let me know what’s up and how I can help.”
The subject line of the email chain was “UHGH.”
That feels about right.
