Life With Boys

The mis-adventures of two crazy boys and their bleary eyed parents.

Beck Family Source — The Fueldner / Beck Name Story and Photo Set

Recovered Beck/Fueldner family-history correspondence and photographs — September 1–8, 2013. Barbara Beach and her brother Bill were reconstructing the family story from memory. Their uncertainty is preserved here; family recollection is not treated as verified genealogy unless the source itself establishes it.

The September 1 photo batch

Barbara sent three photographs and described them in the email:

  • DSC06365.JPG — “New date ranch recently planted.” A black-and-white landscape showing a newly planted date ranch with rows of young palms and mountains in the distance.
  • DSC06366.JPG — ancestors. A scrapbook page with two old photographs labeled by Ellen Ray Beck. The left image is labeled “Daddy-Mother”, which Barbara identified as Claude and Nellie Ray. The right image is labeled “Grandma-1925.” Barbara explicitly said she did not know whether that grandmother was Nellie’s mother or Claude’s mother.
  • DSC06367.JPG — Nellie and young Ellen. A scrapbook page with two portraits. The left image is labeled “Mother” and Barbara identified her as Ellen “Nellie” Ray. The right image is labeled “Ellen”; Barbara thought Ellen Ray Beck may have been about fifteen if the photograph was also circa 1925.

Ellen Ray Beck and the airplane

On September 6 Barbara sent an old color photograph of Ellen Ray Beck standing in front of an airplane. The JPEG was embedded in an older MIME format and had to be recovered from the raw email.

Barbara did not know the exact date. Her family memory was that John Beck flew Ellen across the country to New York after World War II because she had always wanted to go there. Barbara remembered that Ellen later talked about flying around the Statue of Liberty. Barbara estimated the photograph at about 1946–47 and Ellen’s age at about 36–37, but she asked her siblings to confirm or correct that estimate.

The Fueldner / Beck name story

Barbara’s recollection was that her father’s paternal family had originally involved the Fueldner name. She remembered that her grandfather’s mother had children with Mr. Fueldner, that he died while the boys were young, and that she later married Mr. Beck. Barbara believed the boys then used the Beck name and that August Beck later honored his biological father by giving John Beck the middle name Fueldner, which John usually reduced to the initial F.

Bill remembered the story differently. He thought Grandpa Beck may have been the only son fathered by Fueldner, grew up believing he was a Beck, learned “the rest of the story” when he turned 21, inherited his biological father’s business, and chose to keep the Beck name he had been using.

Barbara and Bill later speculated that Mr. Beck, described in the family story as the company bookkeeper and August’s stepfather, may have kept the business going until August came of age. Bill closed the exchange with the most accurate summary of the state of the evidence: “So many unknowns !!!!”

Status: the 2013 Fueldner/Beck email chain and its surviving photographs have been recovered and inventoried. The labeled photo identities above come from Barbara/Ellen’s own annotations. The Fueldner/Beck lineage remains a family-memory research lead and should be verified against documentary genealogy before being treated as fact.

About Me

I started this site so my mom could get news about her grandkids without me having to walk her through the process of trying to open and email attachment several times a week.  Since then she has passed away and I’ve fallen off the blog wagon, but I’m inspired to pick it up again now.
