Life With Boys

The mis-adventures of two crazy boys and their bleary eyed parents.

Tyler’s Next Chapter: Teaching?

And here we are again — another one of those “how did we get from there to here?” moments.

Tyler has finished his BA in Media Arts and Science, focused on 3D modeling, with a minor in sculpture. He is now working as an elementary paraprofessional and thinking seriously about becoming a teacher.

He is looking at certification pathways and trying to decide whether the best route is a master’s degree with certification or a second bachelor’s degree in education. Elementary or middle school seems to be the direction, with the possibility of keeping art or another “specials” area open too.

It is funny how careers take shape. The kid who blended science and art in high school, then studied 3D modeling and sculpture, is now standing in an elementary school trying to figure out whether the classroom might be where those pieces finally come together.

April 28 Update

A few weeks later, the question mark got a little smaller. Tyler submitted an application to Lindenwood University’s Teaching M.A. certification program.

In his letter of intent, he wrote that he wants to build a long-term career in education that combines creativity, technology and meaningful student engagement. He said working as an elementary paraprofessional had confirmed that he wanted to pursue teaching professionally, and that his long-term goal was to blend creativity, technology and student-centered learning in the classroom.

So the kid who started with 3D modeling and sculpture is officially applying to become a teacher. We will see where this path goes.

About Me

I started this site so my mom could get news about her grandkids without me having to walk her through the process of trying to open and email attachment several times a week.  Since then she has passed away and I’ve fallen off the blog wagon, but I’m inspired to pick it up again now.
