“I took this shot on LZ West, spring of early 69, above Que Son Valley, inland between Chu Lai and DaNang, (Army), Everybody wanted me to hook up with Life Magazine and send it to them. My mom printed around 50 snapshots, everybody wanted a copy in My Mortar Platoon. Time Exposure, Kodachrome 2. slide original. Argus C-3 35mm camera,( no light meter). I was in Fire Direction, computing data for the gun squads to fire. (81mm mortar) it was complete darkness. The shot was self illuminated by the muzzle blast. Didn’t know if it worked till my mom sent my a copy while I was still in Country. It Worked!”
