DYING HERE … PLC was zoombombed … need alcohol STAT.
April 17, 2020. We were barely a month into pandemic life, when everything had suddenly moved onto Zoom, including Troop 72’s PLC meeting. And then the PLC got Zoom bombed.
The boys got an unexpected lesson in just how weird the internet could get. Some slammed their computers closed. Some exited immediately. Some apparently saw more than others. Then came the second wave of the disaster: every boy had to explain to his mother exactly what had appeared on the screen.
The Troop Moms comparison of those explanations may have been almost as memorable as the incident itself. Parents tried to piece together what had happened from teenage-boy reports while simultaneously figuring out waiting rooms, passwords, hosts, and all the other Zoom security practices none of us had expected to need a few weeks earlier.
Somewhere in the discussion, the whole thing acquired the name it deserved: the Zoom Room Boom Boom Debacle of 2020.
There was also confusion involving a Phineas and Ferb image that appeared before the explicit video, which meant some parents got particularly strange versions of the story. By the end, everyone was horrified, laughing, checking on the boys, comparing notes, and trying to make sure it could not happen again.
One Troop Mom summed up 2020 perfectly: we complained about 2019, and 2020 basically said, “hold my beer.”
