Where did you go on vacations as a child?
We didn’t really go on many vacations as such. My mom loved to travel, and could easily drive to California in one long haul. She said that Daddy would start heading for home as soon as the sun started to set. I can remember 2 trips with my Dad, but mostly he stayed home to work.
It was not unusual for Mom to come wake us kids up pre-dawn and say, go get in the car. And off we would go. She would freeze a chlorox bottle full of water for cool drinking and pack something to eat, far too tight to pay for much food out. If the trip was several days, it wasn’t unusual to just sleep in the car.
We mostly did day trips, but also travelled to the Pacific Ocean, Disneyland, Colorado mountains, northern New Mexico, Yellowstone, Montana, and the lovely State Capitol of South Dakota, Pierre.
There is no doubt from whence my lifelong love of car camping and traveling in the West came. Go get in the car!
