In September 2017, Dustin York at Maryville reached out with a new kind of opportunity.
“As one of our most valued adjunct faculty members, I wanted measure your interest in a possible opportunity.”
The idea was to build one or more online courses — working with an instructional designer, recording video lectures, writing lecture content and figuring out how to translate what worked in the classroom into an online community.
The development would be a separate contract from teaching, and the email said the pay for building an online class was expected to be $4,000.
At that point there was not yet a formal go-ahead or start date. Dustin was trying to find out who was interested, when they could build, and which courses they would want to develop.
