Recovered family correspondence — February 2, 2015. Original email from Jo Zeimet on Lani’s Groundhog Day birthday.
Happy birthday to Lani! I’m going to eat a couple of your pickle slices today and tell a couple of the old stories.
Jo remembered the time Lani ate several pints of wild plums and AraBelle thought something was terribly wrong; the time Pepper, their pinto pony, dragged Lani because she would not let go of the reins while little Jo was still in the saddle; and high-school-age Lani coming home after curfew and climbing through Jo’s window, only to discover that AraBelle already knew.
Jo also remembered how kind Lani was to a boy with disabilities in her study hall, even when other students might not have been.
Anyway, happy birthday, Lani!
Danielle replied that Jo needed to write these stories down because she had heard the wild-plum story but not the others. Mindy’s response was simple: “I want more stories!!!”
