well, I am not sure how to answer that. For general purposes I am ok. As you know I elected to sell the food mobile food trailer and believe me.......... I took a loss. In fact, it was not the best deal inthe world. The only thing was the guy had cash. The others wanted me to work finance deals which under Nevada law left me liable for everything. That cash is what I am living on. For now, I am still paying debts, buit will likely default later. I hate court, but the entire situation boils down to SHIT HAPPENS. All What I could do a year ago is not possible now. It would take a long time to explain problems of trying to hire employees and/or leasing out the darned thing. Plus changes in operational health, fire and location regulations sort of flushed everything without medical being added to the recipe.
So............. I have applied for a class to take medical assistant training. I cannot attend regular state classes as they require medical insurance of which I cannot afford. $4000 a month is impossible for insurance. That sounds ridiculous, but with my current medical file, it is that expensive. I would need to carry that for a year, too. Any medical training requires students to actually be IN a facility in addition to classroom time. The state nor private hospitals no longer carry coverage on students. We lost our public county hospital last year in public bond default. The county could not keep it open. It was sold to a Renoun which is private. So, that whole situation is a dead end.
One hospital teaches accredited accelerted courses in Carson City. I applied two months ago and was interviewed for the limited student class in late July. The lady said she would definitely call me for the class because I have a proven record of working different shifts, can pass FBI background checks having worked in money handling for casinos, have no record of long term pain medication useage......... etc. ,........... yada yada yada. There were 800 applicants for 15 openings. That seemed dubious to me but was assured that it was a green light. ??????????
Well, they may tell 50 people they are accepted to ensure full enrollment and no delays finding new students at the last minute, too. It takes quite awhile to get background checks completed. I did sign all that paperwork. The state college system was to give final approval on August 12th. Both teachers are from the state university system.............. If that did happen on the 12th with no hitches, they will be setting a start date and notifying us soon. ???????????? MEDICARE pays for the hospital to teach the course. I believe changes to medicare will be for NEW budgets and not already approved stuff. ???????????? Not sure, actually. Perhaps nobody is right now. I asked the teacher interviewing and she was not positive.
They estimated the start date to be some period around Labor Day. Hopefully I will hear this week. I AM GOING NUTS WAITING.
Now for medical stuff. Some things are better and others worse. My blood platelets have dropped to dangerous levels along with a couple related things. The blood sugar has been gradually improving. I have been making multiple trips to CVS pharmacy every week keeping prescriptions filled. I was in the hospital last week having tests run. OF COURSE THIS IS ON MY DOLLAR. I also had to get massive dental work done in late June to remove abcess spots under teeth already crowned. In fact, I have all new front teeth and most of the back ones are now gone............... because the bone rotted away with infections underneath. Try having posts put in for front teem 4 extractions, 2 bone surgeries and 8 existing crowns replaced with new root canals in 5 DAYS. OUCH......... I had to fly to Mexico to get it done. The temp was 115 degrees. All that dental work was cash in advance, but was 10% of the price here. The infections were life threatening and the doctors said fixing them immediately was the only answer. I could not afford to have it done here.
I still have infection pockets exploding in my ears and other places as they try to find exits. FUN FUN FUN. One under my eye looks like a spider bite. I had become septic with infection blood poisoning several times this spring. Time and every pill under the sun is slowly fixing stuff (I think). We will see.
I NEED INSURANCE and the medical field is the only place I can see where that can happen within a reasonable period of time. So, am hoping this class will pan out. I will let you know what transpires. Unless the gal was just bullshitting me, I should be in . We had other hospitals teaching courses in house, but they lost funding and accredidation approval this year leaving only one place in Northern Nevada other than the impossible state college system. I enrolled and then got hit with their mandatory medical coverage situation. They offer student insurance but only for people under 28 years of age. That is $6,000 a semester for even young healthy kids. So, it is just OUT.
I have weird dizzy situations most of the time. It could be nerve damage from infections. I could not drive safely for several months, but that is mostly under control. Getting new glasses is of no use as they eyes are blurry regardless of corrective lenses and the situation changes every few hours. I am doing fairly well there. My blood sugar has dropped to seizure level with no reason a couple times, but I monitor every few hours. It just takes time. There have been no dangerously high readings in two months. My H1C has come down from 500 to 250. My oxygen level, blood pressure, etc. are all PRETTY GOOD. It is just the blood count/bone marrow damage problems which are decades old. It irritates the doctors, but I have dealt with platelets, white cells, etc. for a very long time.............. my whole life. There is not much that can be done. With no insurance, there is even less. I am not eligible for any assitance owning property in Nevada............ NONE............. NOTHING.
There were 200 medical assistant jobs listed locally last week with nobody to fill them. Those are about the only jobs actually listed at all. If worse comes to worse, I can look into Las Vegas classes, but It is almost 500 miles and I do not know if I can afford a lengthy stay down there. We will just have to roll with the punches. St. Mary's hospital gives medical insurance on day one. So, I am JUST WAITING to hear if acceptance was indeed approved. The gal told me two times I would be called. She could have been a flake, too. Who knows?
When are you starting your kids in band? If they are not sports kids, music would be a great thing. I remember your blog said there were no sports summer camps attended. PERSONALLY, I THINK THAT IS WISE. WE HAVE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON SPORTS, GUNS, ETC. in this country. They are all tied together. Some sports are not that way, but team fight to the death mentality is really not good to force down a child's throat. Arts do create individual expression and mental sharpness. That is just MY opinion, but everyone I know that have been jocks only have this hate mentality. A mixture seems to cure those problems.
So, does this answer your question? = pz

Follow-up clarification: Peter explained that the Carson City hospital training program itself provided coverage for students while they were participating in the program. That was one reason the class had attracted roughly 800 applicants for only 15 openings.

Peter’s follow-up clarification

Medicare pays for the hospital in Carson to cover us while there insurance wise.............. not for private treatment on existing illness............ but more along the lines of workman's comp while training. The other hospitals do not have such affiliation. That is why there were 800 applicants for 15 openings. It does negate having to carry private medical insurance to take training. - pz

About Me

I started this site so my mom could get news about her grandkids without me having to walk her through the process of trying to open and email attachment several times a week.  Since then she has passed away and I’ve fallen off the blog wagon, but I’m inspired to pick it up again now.
