Mrs. Oser,

I feel Tyler needs to work on his routines and responsibilities.  I give him one or two step directions to follow here at school.  He is also responsible for showing me his one minute reading every day.  This has been helping him to put things back in the correct locations in the classroom.
At home I would try having him follow one or two step directions like please turn off all the lights not being used in the house.  Once he has finished go around the house with him to check.   A great time to work on responsibility is at bed time.  He needs to be able to follow directions without your help.  Can he go to his room, change, and brush teeth without having help to remember what to do?  Any daily routines you do at home should be independent by this age.  I hope if we are both working with him we will see improvement.  I’m concerned about his ability to be successful in a third grade classroom if he doesn’t learn to be responsible with all his work and materials.  Thank you for your help and understanding.

Thanks,
Mary

Mrs. Oser,

I received your letter on the quiet zone about Tyler’s behavior.  He has had a hard time lately with talking and being organized with his supplies.  The students are to keep their one minute fluency reading in their read to self box.  This way they can easily find it when they need to practice.  I don’t know why this has been so hard for Tyler.  He is struggling to keep his desk/supplies organized.  He is also talking much more than he has in the past.  I’ve talked with him several times about his talking.  He tells me the same answer every time, “I don’t know why I talk”.  I feel this is a skill he should have mastered by this time in second grade.

Thanks,
Mary

About Me

I started this site so my mom could get news about her grandkids without me having to walk her through the process of trying to open and email attachment several times a week.  Since then she has passed away and I’ve fallen off the blog wagon, but I’m inspired to pick it up again now.
