Recovered family correspondence — February 4, 2010.
Jo wrote after thinking about Lani around her birthday. She remembered a cranberry-colored small quilt Lani had given her the Christmas before she died and said a friend had just mended it because they used it so much. “Lani was a great gift-giver, so thoughtful and creative.”
Then Jo caught us up on what she called “Jo’s Big Adventure.” The previous August, a driver ran a red light and hit Jo and her scooter. The scooter was destroyed; Jo suffered a broken leg, crushed ankle and torn shoulder, followed in October by a large pulmonary embolism. By February she was out of the wheelchair and off crutches, doing about two hours of physical therapy every day and slowly rebuilding her aerobic capacity.
She also had a new title she was delighted about: Master Gardener. The program required roughly 70 hours of classroom work and 50 hours of volunteering. Jo planned to work in the county jail garden, help Head Start families start their first gardens, and answer questions through the county extension Help Desk.
She was also hoping Truman would earn the third and final leg of his Rally Novice Obedience title.
Beyond that, life is good, Colorado is sunny, and being in good health is a wonderful thing. Hope you are all prospering and living life to its fullest.
— Jo
In the follow-up she summed up the Master Gardener credential with exactly the right amount of Jo enthusiasm: “Then, one receives a little green badge that says Jo Zeimet, Master Gardener. Weehaw!”
