Recovered family correspondence — March 4–6, 2007.
While Danielle was developing the family/Pearl Harbor book and website, Jo Zeimet questioned parts of the developing family narrative and supplied memories she had heard from her mother.

You write well. A couple of thoughts —
Have you decided your perspective? In other words, is it a book about you and your grandmother, or 3 generations and how it flowed from this experience, or about a 20-something girl from SD who ended up in the middle of a war?
Are you sure about the custody battle thing? That’s news to me.
Enjoy your project and thanks for the peek.

All good questions — I’ll have to see about it. As for the custody thing — I know Mom told me that James kidnapped her at least once.

I don’t think the latter is accurate, but I wasn’t there… Are you hot enough on the internet to do ancient research on CA divorces??

If I was, what would I be looking for?

God, I don’t know. I cruised California and divorce records for awhile, and I’m not sure they go back that far on-line. If you had the date and county, you might ask for an official record, which should have custody stuff on it. I thought they got divorced in CA, not Hawaii. Lani was born in Glendale, yes?
My memory from what Mom said was, he never paid them any attention or a dime of support. He telephoned once when Lani was about 4th grade, and he sent her a globe once for Christmas. To my knowledge, that was it.
Is it germane to your story?
