Tyler starts 1st Grade …

Tyler started first grade Wednesday — was he excited — well he arrived in my room at 5:54 a.m. dressed and ready to go it that is any indication. (Thursday we were back to dragging him out of bed again.)

And the homework power struggle has already begun. Seems this year he has a “red pen” teacher who is busily correcting ill formed letters and sending home worksheets with instructions to practice. Yeah. He erupts into tears because Morgan does not have homework as well, that he did the work and does not understand why he has to keep doing it. I don’t even know where to start. I’m frustrated as well. I don’t really want to be the enforcer all the time. The one who is constantly trying to get him to pay attention, to look at the words before he just shouts out something random (have for that, had for they). I want to keep it positive, to make it fun. I’m just not sure how. Any ideas?

    Hi! I’m not sure if this would help or not. But, I always give my boys about 30-45 mins to “unwind” and clear their mind after they got home. Then we would sit down and start on the homework together with some snacks on hand. I share the sentiment about the “red pen” teachers…!Good luck,Veronica

    Scott pointed to this entry and said: “Behold! Your future!” And I reckon B is going to have some similar issues. I like Veronica’s suggestion about giving them some time to unwind first. I also read somewhere that some boys do better if you let them stand up while doing homework, and/or if you only work 10-15 minutes at a time, then take a short break for running around. Obviously, I haven’t test-driven these yet, so let me know if they work!Also: there are lots of books these days specifically geared toward raising boys and helping them in school (apparently most classrooms aren’t geared toward boys on the more rambunctious end of the spectrum – no surprise, I guess). The one people talk about here is “Boy Smarts”, which is by a local author, Barry MacDonald, but I think there are others as well.

About Me

I started this site so my mom could get news about her grandkids without me having to walk her through the process of trying to open and email attachment several times a week.  Since then she has passed away and I’ve fallen off the blog wagon, but I’m inspired to pick it up again now.
