OK — it’s taken me a week to digest this one. Here goes.
Last week as I’m packing up to head out of work for the day my new boss tells me, I need to do your review (performance evaluation) today. Do you have a minute — this man never needs a minute — he needs an hour — but I can’t really say no can I?
So I’m getting reviewed by someone who has been here two months and is reading off the sheets compiled for people who don’t even apply to my situation — one has left for another job and another is no longer in marketing and they don’t even have one from the guy I worked for most of the year. They did have one from someone who actually does work with me and it was very complimentary. Now the others — not so much.
Now let me give you some background here — the former marketing director and I did not see eye-to-eye on much and it was well known — although we could get things done in our way together. So Mr. former marketing director takes it upon himself to ensure the new guy knows I’m abrasive, don’t know how to follow the chain of command and I don’t know anything about marketing because I was a PR major 10 years ago.
New guy says he’s taking it all with a grain of salt, but I don’t know that I trust that at all. Especially since we’ve already had a few run-ins — I stepped on his toes by doing my job and scheduling a meeting without asking his permission first.
I must say that despite all of this I did get a raise, but it seems a bittersweet. Criticism is one thing, this to me seems like something totally different.
Keep your fingers crossed, I think I may need it.

A few thoughts>1. Your new boss will figure out how talented, smart, and responsible you are.>2. He probably already has a clue that he and his predecessor don’t see things quite the same — proof: you got a raise.>3. Having said the above, you should keep your options over. If it’s too stressful, think about changing jobs. (I know! Easier said than done.)

Hey there SIS, I just wanted to tell you that you do ROCK and as Mom would say just keep on truckin’ and just grin and bear it. Although Pat might be right and it might be good for you to just keep your eyes open for other options. Or maybe this would be a good time for you to go back to school like you were thinking. Regardless, we love you !

Your options are limitless . . . that’s very true. You could always come work for a great PR agency that loves working moms. >>Hang in there, though. You might just need some one-on-one time with the new guy. >>I have to say, though, asking for a minute at the end of the day for a review is pretty bad and insulting. I would have said no (I think). Maybe next time you can ask for a time scheduled in advance.>>Hang in there, and think of how the SPQs would handle it. 😉

abrasive is a word they use to describe women, whereas a man would be called talented or in control.>don’t worry about it, and don’t internalize someone elses label
About Me
I started this site so my mom could get news about her grandkids without me having to walk her through the process of trying to open and email attachment several times a week. Since then she has passed away and I’ve fallen off the blog wagon, but I’m inspired to pick it up again now.
