Life with boys … kinda …earlier this month I joined several amazing women for a weekend of laughter, silliness and “crazy southern love” as my sister put it … we were all there to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sweet Potato Queens participation in the Jackson, Mississippi St. Patrick’s day parade …. I came across the Sweet Potato Queens books by Jill Conner Browne not long after the unexpected death of my mom … they found me when I was engulfed by diapers, laundry and grief … when his life with boys was still brand new and I had yet to find my tribe … it was in those passages I found solace and courage in the irreverence and possibility for a future with smiles again … I devoured all of the books … and convinced my sister to drag a bunch of people to Mississippi in 2008 and 2009 to soak in the queenly experience … then life, and kids, and a pandemic got in the way … but the queens were still there … the numbers may have dwindled … and the audience might be a bit more mature … but that is just fine … together we remembered the importance of friendship, and unconditional support and most importantly that we are still young at heart … and not to get on an elevator in a prom dress with nine other people …
