What is it about the toy aisle at Target that inspires a serious questioning of beliefs, especially of the belief in Santa Claus? On two separate trips this weekend each of the boys questioned me about the “realness” of the man in red.
For Tyler is was a more general – “so you help Santa get the presents right? That’s why I told Morgan he couldn’t ask for the Nike shoes.”
For Morgan – it was more round-about. “Mom, is Santa real, ‘cause the kids at school say he’s not.”
“Well, what do you think?”
“Mom, just tell me.”
“Are you asking if Santa is a real person or if we should believe in the spirit of Santa?”
“I just need to know if I need to buy my toys for my kids when I’m old.”
Yeah … the magic has faded. No milk and cookies for Santa this year. Nevertheless, both have promised not to reveal what they know to anyone – even each other.
